Singing in the Rain

When the skies cloud over, my life gets a little more sunny. There's nothing I love more than a rainy day, and apparently, I'm not alone. A quick browse through sites like Pinterest and Tumblr show numerous posts with tags like "rain," and "rainy day." The simple joy people get from rain is so prevalent that the Urban Dictionary gives a word to this phenomenon:

Pluviophile - (n) a lover of rain; someone who finds joy and peace of mind during rainy days.
Imagine a rainy day, take in all the details - the grey overcast sky, the damp smell of earth, the patter of the drops hitting the window - perfection.

Not only do I love the rain itself, I also love staying in on rainy days. They're the perfect occasion to combine another of my favourite things - old movies. There's nothing quite like curling up on a rainy day, with a cozy blanket, a bottle of wine and a little Audrey Hepburn.

But the absolute best part of a rainy day comes at the very end of the day, that absolutely blissful moment when you lay your head on the pillow and realize that you get to fall asleep to the sound of rain. I love this so much that I downloaded an app for my phone that plays the sound of rain - there are several free or nominally priced versions for iPhone available through the App Store. My favourite is Relax Melodies - a free app that lets you mix sounds to create a personalized sleep experience.

Rainy day favourite things:

Kate Spade Umbrella

Hunter Boots

Roman Holiday

Cozy Blanket

  1. I love the rain too...thunder storms and lightening are fascinating to me. I like to curl up with a cup of hot tea and a lose myself in a good book.

  2. Hey Erin, I am also a fellow rain lover. It is just so relaxing, calming, peaceful... the list goes on and on. I also like to curl up and throw on a flick during a storm but I'm more of a hot chocolate and marshmallows kind of guy. Recently, I downloaded a couple free apps to listen to some rain, lightning and thunder. They are called "Storm Sim" and "Rain, Rain".

I will definitely check out the "Relax Melodies" app, so thanks a bunch for the recommendation :)

  4. I also to fall asleep to the sound of rain, growing up on the west coast (a.k.a. wet coast) I have certainly grown an appreciation for that sound. I like your positive perspective within the everyday details of life. I look forward to reading more!

  5. I totally agree with you - I love falling asleep to rain, and waking up to it on lazy days - although the worst is when you have to get up to go to work. Will definitely take a look at that app, thanks Erin!

  6. I'm glad I'm not the only one that enjoys rainy days. One of my favorite things to do is to go for nice walks in summer rainfalls, something oddly relaxing about it.
Plus it's so easy to get comfortable in blankets on the couch when you hear rain outside, don't really know why.

I wish we could exchange snowfalls for falling rain!
